No matter your design style, Lauren Conner says that a laundry room in a forever home needs three things: plenty of natural light, ample room for floor-to-ceiling storage, and more space than you'd expect to outfit the room with the necessary appliances and gadgets needed for a purposeful utility area. She champions the notion that if there's a space you use every day, no matter if it's just for chores, it may as well be a place you can look forward to spending time in.

“Laundry rooms are no longer relegated to dark and dingy basements and instead benefit from being located on the same level as the bedrooms,” says Conner. “This is because we often expect them to perform other duties beyond laundering, like serving as a mudroom, housing pet stations, or providing storage for coolers and sports equipment.”

It turns out, one of the most underrated—and under-styled—spaces in the home could actually become one of the most efficient and beautiful by considering your household's specific needs and how you can elevate the design to be on par with the rest of your home. Once you've carefully maximized square footage in terms of function and style, you just may find yourself looking for the excuse to throw in yet another load of towels.
