This Kitchen Design “Faux Pas” Is Officially All the Rage, According to Designers

If you guessed mixing metals, you’d be right on all counts. And if you’re confused as to how that could be, read on — because I asked kitchen and interior design experts for the facts behind this fad.

Why was Mixing Metal considered a “Faux Pas”?

“Mixing metals in the kitchen has historically been considered a design misstep due to a preference for cohesion in high-end spaces,” says Brit Angelesco, executive vice president of appliance brand ZLINE. “Traditionally, design norms favored uniformity, believing consistency in metal created a polished look,” adds Founding Principal of Blue Lantern Studios, Kat Blue.

The Rise of Metal Hardware in the Kitchen

“The shift away from rigidly matching metals began gaining momentum a few years ago as people were looking to add their personal touch to their space,” Angelesco says. And from the early 2000s onwards, “trends sped up so quickly that throwing the same finish everywhere pretty much guaranteed a stale look within a decade,” says Melanie Bryant, owner of her namesake interior design firm. The resultant rebellion toward that more generic, blank-slate style meant shifting to the other extreme — a more maximalist approach that allowed for individual expression.
