Perfecting the art of interior design involves more than simply selecting complementary furniture and strategically arranging spaces. Light is also a crucial factor to consider, including how to layer it, how to harness it, and how to play with the natural beams that enter a space. North facing rooms are uniquely challenging because they tend to get the least amount of natural sunlight throughout the day.
“North-facing walls receive cooler, softer light, which can make some colors feel muted or flat if not selected thoughtfully,” explains Ashley Banbury, interior designer and color marketing manager at HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams. “To counteract the lack of direct sunlight, I recommend choosing hues that bring warmth, softness, or a sense of grounded calm.” Conversely, avoid sharp or dark colors, especially those with cool or gray undertones, along with any icy blues, bright whites, or silvery grays.
