'Fancy' Interior Details Designers Say Aren't Worth the Money

Home might be where the heart is, but the finest spaces are usually a product of unbridled creativity, limitless time and patience, and, yes, money. Whether you proudly flaunt your wealth with an expertly curated art collection or bookshelf, or you prefer the subtleties of quiet luxury, many people put their hard-earned money on display with fancy finishes, custom furniture, and hi-tech touches.
"I can't overstate the benefits of being surrounded by small, fancy touches," says Austin designer Killy Scheer. "I use them to bring awareness to moments of understated luxury: Toes sinking into a plush hand-knotted rug; the textural elegance of an embroidered pillowcase; a brass switch plate or cheeky towel hook in a powder bath that starts a conversation."
Many designers would be able to justify that the sticker shock that typically comes with a kitchen island flushed in Carrara marble or custom furniture, but there are other flashy features that even leave the pros puzzled. To be honest, some of those high-ticket items feel over-priced, over-hyped, and so not worth the money.
